http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer

http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer

Bombardier:

http://www.k2kapital.com/analytics/reviews/detail.php?BID=4&ID=151587

The Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante (banner in Portuguese) is a general purpose 15-21 passenger twin-turboprop light transport aircraft suitable for military and civil duties. It is manufactured by the Brazilian corporation, Embraer.

In August 2006 a total of 159 EMB 110 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service around world with some 65 airlines[1]. Major operators include:...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_120_Brasilia

The Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia is a twin-turboprop commuter airliner, produced by Embraer. It first flew on 27 July 1983, and entered commercial service in October 1985.

Since 1994, manufacture has focused exclusively on the EMB 120ER, with extended range (1575 km) and increased capacity.

Most of the EMB-120's were sold in the US and the Western Hemisphere although some have been purchased by airlines such as Regional in France, DAT in Belgium, DLT in Germany. Although no aircraft have been produced since 2002 it is still available to order because it is made on the same assembly line as the ERJ's, and is made out of many of the same parts. The extinction of commercial turboprops during the late 1990's and the first few years of the current decade was caused by an influx of regional jets. The EMB-120 was a victim of this as well. Only the ability to be built on a regional jet line has saved it from following the out-of-production aircraft like the Saab 340, Do-328, and others. As the aircraft is still officially "in production," it is possible that the recent resurgence of turboprops may result in additional orders for the Brasilia.

The EMB 120 Brasilia is Embraer's only currently-produced aircraft that is a Turboprop. Skywest Airlines currently operates a large fleet of EMB-120s under the United Express and Delta Connection brand. It is available as the EMB-120, 120RT, and 120ER. It uses the same fuselage as other Embraer ERJ aircraft, the ERJ 135, ERJ 140, ERJ 145, and ERJ 145-XR. Other Embraer airliners include the E-Jets, including ERJ-170, ERJ-175, ERJ-190 and ERJ-195.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_121_Xingu

The Embraer EMB 121 Xingu is a twin-turboprop fixed-wing aircraft built by the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, Embraer. The design of this plane is based on the EMB 110 Bandeirante, borrowing its wing and engine design merged with an all-new fuselage. The EMB 121 first flew on October 10, 1976 and entered service on May 20, 1977 in both military and civil roles.

A modified form of the EMB 121, the EMB 121A1 Xingu III, was introduced on September 4, 1981 with a more powerful engine (PT6A-42), increased seating (8 or 9 passengers) and a larger fuel capacity.

Before production ceased in August 1987, Embraer had produced 106 EMB 121 aircraft, 51 of which were exported to countries outside Brazil. Today the French Air Force is the largest operator with 43 aircraft still in service.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer/FMA_CBA_123_Vector

The Embraer/FMA CBA 123 Vector is a 1990 Turboprop aircraft designed for regional flights, carrying up to 19 passengers. The development of the aircraft was made by a partnership between the Brazilian company Embraer and the Argentine FMA (current Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina SA), thus the name "CBA", which stands for "Brazil-Argentina Cooperation". The aircraft was one of the most modern Turboprops of its time, including top-notch technology in avionics, aerodynamics, and propulsion.

The CBA 123 Vector project, which cost US$ 300 million, was then cancelled, with only two prototypes built.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_ERJ_145_family

The Embraer ERJ 145 family of regional jets are produced by Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace company. Family members include the ERJ 135, ERJ 140, and ERJ 145, as well as the Legacy business jet and the R-99 AWACS aircraft. The ERJ 145 is the largest of the group. Each jet in the series is powered by two turbofan engines. The family's primary competition comes from the Canadair Regional Jet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_E-Jets

The Embraer E-Jets are a series of twin-engine jet airliners, produced in Brazil. All variants share the same fuselage cross-section and most systems. The 170 and 175 share wings and engines, differing only in fuselage length and maximum take-off weight. The 190 and 195 also share wing and engines in the same manner. They are the largest aircraft produced by Embraer.

E-170/175

The E-170 family is the smaller of the two, competing with regional jets such as the Canadair CRJ-900 and the Sukhoi Russian Regional Jet. It also is helping replace aging aircraft such as the BAe-146 and Fokker 70.

The Embraer 170 was the first aircraft of the family to be produced. The first model was rolled out on 29 October 2001. The first test flight was on February 19 of the following year. The aircraft was not revealed to the public until May of 2002 at the Regional Airline Association convention. After a positive response from the airline community, Embraer proceeded with the launch of the stretched E-175 in June 2003. Certification for the 170 took nearly 2 years after the public debut before delivery of the first aircraft to the launch customer LOT Polish Airlines. Following deliveries went to other customers. As of 2006, the E-170 is operated in the United States under the colors of Delta Connection, US Airways Express and United Express, with flights being operated by Shuttle America and Republic Airlines. Asia's first operator was Hong Kong Express Airways with a fleet of 4 Embraer 170's.

* Embraer 170 - In August 2006 a total of 111 Embraer 170 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service, with 30 further firm orders. Major operators include: LOT Polish Airlines (10), Republic Airlines (2:cool: and Shuttle America (45). Some 6 other airlines operate the type in smaller numbers. In September 2006, Egyptair has announced that it will have a firm order of 6 airplanes with an option for another 6 for its newly launched subsiday, Egyptair Express. These Embraer 170 aircrafts will be used to fly to domestic and regional destinations.
* Embraer 175 - In August 2006 a total of 20 Embraer 175-200LR aircraft remain in airline service, with 68 further firm orders. Major operators include Air Canada with 15 aircraft. Major firm orders include 30 aircraft for Republic Airlines and 36 aircraft for Compass Airlines (a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines).

E-190/195

The E-190 family is a larger stretch of the E-170 model fitted with a new, larger wing and a new engine, the GE CF34-10. Being in the 100 seat range, it competes with smaller mainline jets including the Boeing 717-200 and 737-600 as well as the Airbus A318 and A319. The first flight of the E-190 was in March of 2004, with the first flight of the 195 in December of the same year. The launch customer of the E-190 was New York-based low cost carrier JetBlue with 100 orders and 100 options. European low cost carrier flybe is launching the E-195 with 14 orders and 12 options. As the 190/195 family is of mainline aircraft size, many airlines will operate them as such, fitting them with a business class section and operating them themselves, instead of having them flown by a commuter airline partner.

* Embraer 190 - In August 2006 a total of 36 Embraer 190 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service, with 199 further firm orders. Major operators include: Air Canada with 15 aircraft (and 30 firm orders) and JetBlue Airways with 20 aircraft (and 81 firm orders). Other major firm orders include 57 aircraft for US Airways.
* Embraer 195 - In August 2006 there are a total of 36 firm orders for the Embraer 195 aircraft (all variants), from Royal Jordanian (7), Flybe (14) and Swiss International Air Lines. Flybe has recently taken delivery of the first Embraer 195 Jets (15).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_314_Super_Tucano

The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, also named ALX or A-29 is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter insurgency (COIN) and pilot training missions, incorporating modern avionics and weapons systems. It is currently in use by the air forces of Brazil and Colombia, and Embraer has plans to sell it to other countries in Asia and the Middle East. Besides pilot training, it is heavily employed in monitoring operations in the Amazon region.

Variants
* A-29A - Single-seater for attack and armed reconnaissance (on interdiction tasks), attack and cover (on close air support tasks), able to intercept and destroy low performance aircraft.
* A-29B - Twin-seater for the same tasks as the single seat version, also used in training and advanced aerial control (on monitoring tasks).

Operators
Brazil: 99 units
Colombia: 25 units
Dominican Republic: 10 units (ordered in January/2007)

On 11 January, 2006 Embraer had a potential sale of 36 units to Venezuela fall through when the United States of America vetoed the sale. The US government has a say in the sale of any weapons system that utilises US technology. In this case, the Super Tucano uses a Pratt & Whitney Canada engine, and Pratt & Whitney Canada belongs to Hartford, Connecticut based United Technologies. Many other components are also of US origin.
http://airwar.ru/enc/other/stucano.html

Super Tucano.

http://airwar.ru/enc/attack/alx.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMX_International_AMX

The AMX International AMX "Ghibli" is a surface attack aircraft for battlefield interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance missions. It is built by the AMX International joint venture. In the Brazilian Air Force, it is designated the A-1.

The first prototype flew on May 15 1984. Although it was lost on its fifth flight (killing its pilot), the test programme was otherwise reasonably smooth. Mass production started by mid-1986, with the first examples delivered to the Italian and Brazilian air forces in 1989. Since then, some 200 AMXs have been built.

In Combat

Italian AMX aircraft were used in 1999 in the Kosovo war. Instead using unguided or more traditional laser-guided bombs, the Italian Air Force used Mk 82 bombs fitted with Israeli Opher guidance kits, effectively converting the "dumb" bombs into an infrared-guided bomb.

Variants

* AMX-T: In 1986, development of a two-seat advanced trainer variant was undertaken. This was intended to provide trainee pilots with experience on fast jets, while still retaining the one seater's attack capabilities. The AMX-T first flew in 1990 and equips both the Italian and Brazilian air forces.

The Embraer R-99 and P-99 are a conversion of the ERJ 145 civil regional jet airliner, for military purposes. Both variations were designed by the Brazilian Air Force and Raytheon. The R-99 series are equipped with Rolls-Royce AE 3007 engines, though are modified to provide 20% more thrust than the civil version. The first flight was in 1999.

The R-99A is an Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft, equipped with the Erieye airborne radar from Ericsson AB of Sweden. The FAB claims that it has 95% of the capability of the larger AWACS aircraft which are in service in the air forces of some other nations.

The R-99B is an remote sensing aircraft. It employs a synthetic aperture radar, combination electro-optical and FLIR systems as well as a multi-spectral scanner. The aircraft also possesses signal intelligence and C3I capabilities.

The P-99 is the maritime patrol version of the R-99. It shares much of the same sensor suite as the R-99B, but most visibly, lacks the multi-spectral scanner and the side-looking radar. It retains many of the C3I and ELINT capabilities of the R-99B. The P-99 also carries four under-wing hard points, which can be mounted with a variety of torpedoes and/or anti-ship missiles. Mexico was the launch customer for this variant.

In Brazilian service, the R-99A and R-99B are based in Anapolis AFB. Five R-99As and three R-99Bs are operated by the Air Force as part of the SIVAM program.

The Embraer Lineage 1000 is a variant of the Embraer 190, launched as a private jet on May 2, 2006. Manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer, the Lineage is planned to be an "ultra-large" business jet with comfortable seating for 19.

The Lineage is largely based on the successful Embraer passenger jet, the E-190. ... Another selling point is the larger fuselage cross section than other comparable business jets, such as the Gulfstream V and the Bombardier Global Express. The Lineage is only topped in available space by the 737 and A319 and A318 converts, the BBJ and ACJ.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_Legacy_600

The Embraer Legacy 600 is a business jet derivative of the Embraer ERJ 145 family of commercial jets. The Legacy is based on the shortened ERJ 135 model, but includes added range with extra fuel tanks and added winglets, similar to those on the ERJ 145XR. Launched in 2000 at the Farnborough Air Show, the Legacy is capable of carrying 16 passengers in comfort for 3,250 nm. As of recently, the Legacy family also includes the Legacy Shuttle, which applies the range of the Legacy to a passenger cabin configuration similar to the ERJ 135.

The Legacy competes on the upper end of the small to mid sized range of business jets. It is unique in having nearly the exact opposite design progression as the rival Canadair Challenger. The Legacy was derived from the established Embraer ERJ 145 family regional jet, while the Canadair Regional Jet was developed by Bombardier from the Challenger business jet. Both lines of aircraft are direct competitors. Embraer has since launched lines of aircraft such as the Phenom 300 and the Lineage 1000 to compete with Bombardier in all markets.

In six years of service, the Legacy has so far sold 71 aircraft, to 17 countries. It is advertised as the "ideal balance of comfort and cost" and boasts comfortable seating for 16 passengers in three partitioned sections, or seating for 19-37 in comfortable airline style seats on the Legacy Shuttle. In the cockpit, the Legacy also includes a Honeywell avionics suite, with a full glass cockpit and fly-by-wire controls.

The Embraer EMB 202 Ipanema is an agricultural aircraft used for aerial application, particullary crop dusting. It's produced by Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva, a subsidiary of Embraer located in the city of Botucatu. The latest version of this aircraft is the first alcohol-powered fixed-wing aircraft, which gives it many economical and ecological advantages over the gasoline version. The aircraft is widely employed on Brazil, having market share of about 80%, and completed 1,000 deliveries on March 15, 2005. Besides aircraft, alcohol-conversion kits for gasoline-powered Ipanemas are also sold. ...

On the 1960s, the development of a Brazilian agriculture aircraft was motivated by the expansion of agricultural products' market, specially soybean and sugar cane. During this time, the Ipanema aircraft was developed by engineers of the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA) on the Ipanema Farm, located on Sorocaba.

The first version of the aircraft, the EMB-200, made its first flight on 1970 and was certified on December 1971. The aircraft was equipped with a 260 HP propeller. Series production started on 1972 by Embraer. On September 1974, the EMB-201 was released, including many improvements such as a 300 HP propeller, new blades, new wings and increased capacity.

On 1982, the production of Ipanema was transferred to Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva, recently acquired by Embraer. On 1992, a new model, called EMB-202 or Ipanemão, was released. The new aircraft had improvements on aerodynamics, a 40% greater capacity, and an optional, modern equipment for electrostatic aerial application.

History

Foundation

The creation of a Brazilian aircraft manufacurer was planned during the 1940s by the Brazilian Government as part of a technical development formed by the General Command for Aerospace Technology (CTA), the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA) and Embraer.

The first step to the creation of a Brazilian aircraft industry was the creation of IPD - Instituto de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento (Research and Development Institute), current IAE - Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (Aeronautics and Space Institute), which was born inside CTA, on January 1, 1954. In the following years, the IPD developed many aircraft projects, such as the Beija-Flor helicopter. Even without commercial expression, these projects were important to the advance of Brazilian aeronautics development.

The major change occurred on March 29, 1965, when IPD received a proposal of a turboprop biplane from the French engineer Max Holste. A group of engineers led by Ozires Silva would turn this proposal into a larger scale project, the IPD-6504, or Bandeirante, which flew for the first time on October 26, 1968. IPD wanted the 6504 to move into serial production, but faced a lack of interest from private companies. It was clear that the creation of a government-owned company was necessary.

Finally, on July 29, 1969, Embraer was created by the Ministry of Aeronautics. By this time, the company had about 500 employees, including many former engineers from both CTA and ITA, and planned to build two Bandeirante aircraft a month. Ozires Silva became the president of the new company.

Growth and expansion

The three first series version Bandeirante, were delivered in February, 1973 to the Brazilian Air Force. In the same month, Transbrasil bought the first commercial Bandeirante, which made its debut on April 16, 1973. Exports began in 1975, and the Bandeirante proved to be a huge success in the international aviation market, upstaging other aircraft of its category in performance. About 500 Bandeirante were sold, for 36 countries.

Brazil's Ministry of Aeronautics made large efforts to contribute to the growth of Embraer. Two existing projects, the Urupema glider, and the Ipanema agricultural aircraft, were transferred to the new manufacturer. A request for assembly in series of 112 Aermacchi MB-326 trainer aircraft (to be later designated Xavante), was also made. The Ipanema is still produced today, with more than 1,000 units sold. The Xavante was produced for 11 years, with 186 units sold.

In August, 1974, Embraer established a cooperation with Piper Aircraft to assemble many general aviation products by license, including the models PA-28 Cherokee, PA-34 Seneca, and PA-31 Navajo. These aircraft respectively received the designations of EMB 712 Tupi, EMB 810D Seneca and EMB 820C Navajo. All these products, plus the Ipanema, were transferred to Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva subsidiary in March, 1980.

On October 22, 1975, the company's first pressurized aircraft, the Xingu, made its inaugural flight. The aircraft was smaller than the Bandeirante, thus it didn't become a successor; a few dozens Xingu were built, with most being delivered to the French Air Force in 1981. By request of the Ministry of Aeronautics, Embraer developed its first combat aircraft, the Tucano, which made its inaugural flight on December 16, 1980. This aircraft became the most successful turboprop military trainer ever built, with more than 650 units sold around the world.

The development of a regional airliner able to replace the Bandeirante started in the end of the 1970s. This project took the form of a turboprop able to carry 30-40 passengers, the Brasilia, which was certified in May, 1985. Unlike the Bandeirante, the Brasilia begun its career as an exportation product, entering service with the American Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA). This was the result of the trust that Embraer gained in the international aviation market with the Bandeirante. The production of Brasilia officially ended on 2002, with 350 units sold; however, the aircraft may still be produced on demand.

In July, 1981, Embraer joined the AMX Program, which purpose was to establish a partnership to develop a subsonic fighter. Together with Aeritalia (current Alenia Aeronautica) and Aermacchi, Embraer worked on the development of the AMX fighter, which was later used to replace old military aircraft on Italia and Brazil. The first Brazilian AMX made its inaugural flight on October 16, 1985. This project gave Embraer access to new technologies, which would be crucial on the following projects.

1990 Crisis

The next commercial project was a 19 passengers turboprop developed in partnership with FMA (current Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina), the CBA 123 Vector, which made its inaugural flight on July 30, 1990. Although including some of the finest technologies available, the Vector wasn't accepted by the market because of its high price, and was cancelled without a single aircraft being sold.

By the end of the 1980s, government investments on the aerospace industry were largely reduced, due to the Constitution of 1988, which extinguished many forms of support to the industry, and due to the lack of interest in the defense area caused by the end of the Cold War. Combined with the failure of the Vector project, and the crisis in the aviation segment caused by the oil price increase of 1990, made Embraer slide into a deep financial crisis. Massive cuts of expenses were made until 1994, and from the 12,600 employees the company had on 1990, only 3,200 remained. With all this happening, engineers of Embraer were focusing in a new project - a Turbofan regional airliner for 45 passengers, the ERJ 145.

Privatization and recovery

On December 7, 1994, Embraer was privatized, and Maurício Botelho, former executive director of Bozano Group, was named the new president. Botelho's skills as vendor and businessman greatly contributed to the recovery of the company. Partnerships with other companies such as Parker Hannifin, Allison Engine Company, and Honeywell ensured enough investments to the development of the ERJ 145. The outstanding sales of the new regional jet allowed Embraer to finally recover and regain its position as one of the world's most important aircraft manufacturers. More than 900 ERJ 145 and aircraft based on the ERJ 145 platform (ERJ 135, ERJ 140, Legacy, 145 AEW&C, 145 RS/AGS and P-99) were delivered until early 2006.

The next aircraft to be developed was a modern military trainer and light attack aircraft, the Super Tucano or ALX, which flew for the first time on June 2, 1999. This aircraft was sold to the Brazilian and Colombian air forces, and it's mainly employed in the Amazon region.

On July, 1999, Embraer announced the development of a new family of aircraft: the E-Jets Series, comprising of the Embraer 170, 175, 190 and 195 aircraft. With this decision, Embraer advanced to the 70-110 seat market. The inaugural flight of the first model, the Embraer 170, was made on February 19, 2002.

Today, attempts to expand its presence in the Business jets category with an array of jets of varying sizes: the Lineage 1000, the Legacy 600, the Phenom 100 and the Phenom 300. In the Defense category, Embraer develops mission systems for air and/or ground operation; current customers are Brazil, Mexico, Greece and India.

Embraer said Frederico Fleury Curado will succeed Maurício Botelho as the company's president and CEO next year. Mr. Curado, 45 years old, will take charge of the company, known as Embraer, in April. He has worked for Embraer since 1984, and has been vice president for the commercial aviation market for the past eight years. A succession plan for that post hasn't been determined.

Shareholders

Originally Embraer was 51% controlled by the Brazilian government, the remainder held by private investors. With the privatization in 1994, control has passed to three Brazilian investment groups (Previ and Sistel pension funds and Bozano Group), with each holding 20% of the voting capital. Another 20% was acquired in 1999 as part of a strategic partnership to develop advanced military aircraft by a European consortium (EADS, Dassault Aviation and Thales Group hold 5.67% each, and SNECMA holds 2.99%). The remainder was publicly traded.

The Brazilian government remained involved through the possession of a golden share (1% of capital) in the company, which allows it to veto certain deals regarding military aircraft sales and technology transfer to foreign countries.

On March 31, 2006, a capital restructuring proposal was approved, consisting of a simplified capital structure composed of one type of shares (common shares). Current capital distribuition is as follows: Bozano Group 11.10%, Previ 16.40%, Sistel 7.40%, BNDES 6.30%, Brazilian Government 0.30%, Others Bovespa 19.20%, Others NYSE 39.30%.

Government Subsidization Controversy

Both Embraer and its main competitor, Bombardier, were engaged in a subsidy dispute in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was found by the World Trade Organization (WTO), in a 2000 ruling, that Embraer has received illegal subsidies from the Government of Brazil, designed to gain market share at the expense of international competitors. In its ruling, the WTO ordered Brazil to eliminate its Proex export subsidies program, designed to aid Embraer, and has also authorized foreign states to impose retaliatory trade sanctions against Brazil. Similar measures have also been taken against Embraer competitors.

EMB 314 Super Tucano

Development of EMB-314 began January 1991; announced (as EMB-312H) at Paris Air Show June 1991; Embraer development aircraft PT-ZTW (c/n 312161, previously used as prototype for TPE331-powered Tucano adopted by Royal Air Force) modified as Tucano H proof-of-concept (POC) prototype, making first flight in this form 9 September 1991. This aircraft toured US Air Force/Navy bases August and September 1992 as preliminary to Super Tucano entry in JPATS competition; Embraer teamed with Northrop May 1992 to bid Super Tucano for JPATS, but was unsuccessful. Provisional Brazilian type certification granted August 1994 after 500 hour, 396 sortie test and certification programme.

Two EMB-312H prototypes (PT[later PP]-ZTV, c/n 312454, first flight 15 May 1993, and PP-ZTF, c/n 312455, first flight 14 October 1993) tailored to US JPATS requirements as EMB-312HJ. Designation subsequently changed to EMB-314 to reflect extensive modifications to structure and systems.

Current Versions

EMB-314 differs from EMB-312 mainly in having more powerful engine, reprofiled wing and plugs of 0.37 m (1 ft 2½ in) forward and 1.00 m (3 ft 3¼ in) aft of cockpit to accommodate longer engine and retain CG and stability.

ALX (EMB-314M)

Brazilian Air Force (FAB) version, for border patrol missions under its SIVAM (SIstema de Vigilancia da AMazonia) programme. FAB finalised specification in early 1994; trials to validate projected flight characteristics, using POC aircraft and both Super Tucano prototypes, completed 1994. US$50 million development contract signed 18 August 1995 for two prototypes (one single-seat) to be modified from Super Tucano prototypes. The first flew in May 1996 and is being used for external stores compatibility and handling qualities testing; the second, which flew in early 1997, for testing the advanced weapons systems. Total 650 hours accumulated by early 2002, with up to 300 more required for completion.

FAB commitment to purchase 99 ALXs, of which 50 will be two-seat. AT-29Bs and 49 will be single-seat A-29As. Both versions operated by four squadrons: 2°/5° Grupo of Training Command at Natal AFB, 1°/3° Grupo at Boa Vista, 2°/3° Grupo at Porto Velho; and, from 12 May 2006, 3°/3° Grupo at Campo Grande; Prototype 5700 (the former EMB-314 PP-ZTV), designated YA-29, rolled out 28 May 1999; IOC originally intended in May 2001 but FAB formal order only placed (76 firm, plus 23 options) on 8 August 2001; production started February 2002; deliveries began 18 December 2003; total of at least seven A-29As and 32 A-29Bs in service by late 2006. Elbit selected December 1996 to supply mission avionics, including ventral FLIR Systems AN-AAQ-22 turret, GPS/INS, radalt, Mode S transponder, DME, ILS, ADF, VOR, RWR, MAWS and chaff/flare dispenser. Export variants of both versions will be offered for border patrol/COIN missions and for basic/advanced pilot training. Can be flown as single-seat attack aircraft with fuel tank in rear cockpit.

Customers

Following Brazil's commitment to 99 ALXs, Dominican Republic announced an order for 10 on 20 August 2001, but later abandoned procurement. Colombia finalized a contract for 25 Super Tucanos on 7 December 2005; delivery of first five was announced one year later, on 7 December 2006; to be followed by batches of 10 in 2007 and 2008. Unsuccessfully demonstrated to Singapore in 2006.

Embraer?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier

Bombardier Aerospace:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Aerospace

Bombardier Global Express XRS).

В 1992 году Bombardier приобрела убыточное подразделение Boeing в Канаде de Havilland Aircraft of Canada. (Laurent Beaudoin).

ERJ 135/ERJ 140/ERJ 145)

http://www.k2kapital.com/analytics/reviews/detail.php?BID=4&ID=154258

Canadair Regional Jets:

Fokker 70.

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/bae146-300.html

387 (Avro RJ: 166; BAe 146: 221).

Production ran from 1983 until 2002, switching to an improved version known as the Avro RJ in 1992. A further-improved version, the Avro RJX – with new engines – was announced in 1997, but only three prototypes were built before production ceased in late 2001.

The BAe 146 comes in -100, -200 and -300 models. The equivalent Avro RJ versions are designated RJ70, RJ85, and RJ100.

In August 2006 a total of 158 BAE 146 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service.

In August 2006 a total of 152 Avro RJ aircraft (all variants) also remain in airline service.

Fokker F70:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_70

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/f70.html

The Fokker company of the Netherlands started to develop the F70 airliner in November 1992 with an aim to replace its ageing Fokker F28 airliner, with a more modern and fuel efficient aircraft. The Fokker F70's first flight occurred on April 4, 1993 and the first production aircraft flew for the first time in July 1994. Certification was granted on October 14, 1994, while the first delivery of a Fokker F70 to a customer, Ford Motor Company (in an "Executive Jet" configuration), occurred later in the same month.

The last ever Fokker F70 was delivered in April 1997, when the production line closed following Fokker's bankcruptcy the previous year, in March 1996. Over the F70's short production life, 47 Fokker F70s were built.

Fokker F100:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_F100

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/f100.html

Low operational costs and almost no competition in the 100-seat short-range class made it a best seller when it was introduced in the late 1980s, but improved models of the Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 and A318 affected sales and Fokker became insolvent. Production ended in 1997 with 283 airframes delivered. In August 2006 229 Fokker F100 aircraft remained in airline service with 47 airlines around the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_717

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/md95.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_737

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/b737-600.html

Airbus A318:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A320#A318

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/a318.html

The price of an A318 ranges from $39 to $45 million, and operating costs are around $3,000 for a 500 mile flight.

Orders for the A318 have been quite slow, only slightly better than for its direct competitor the B737-600. As of fall 2006 Airbus had received 90 orders for this model compared to 70 for the B737-600.

Saab 2000:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_2000

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/saab2000.html

The Saab 2000 first flew on March 26, 1992, and entered into service in 1994, a few months after its certification by the Joint Aviation Authorities in March and the Federal Aviation Administration in April.

Sales of the Saab 2000 were fairly limited, although 34 were operated by Crossair, an airline Swissair had shares in. Due to poor sales, Saab stopped production of the Saab 2000 in 1999. In 2000, only 54 Saab 2000 aircraft were in service. The primary reason for poor sales was the success of low-cost regional jets such as the Embraer ERJ-145 and the Canadair CRJ-200, which provided better performance and passenger comfort for the same initial price.

In November 2006 a total of 44 Saab 2000 aircraft remain in airline service...

Yakovlev Yak-42:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yak-42

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/yak42d.html

The Yak-42 was built at Smolensk, and it entered service with Aeroflot in late 1980. Almost 100 had been delivered by 1993.

Current models include the Yak-42 base version, the Yak-142 with a higher gross weight, and the Yak-42D-100 with western avionics that never entered serial production. Late in 1997, Yakovlev announced the development of the Yak-42A, an improved version of the Yak-42D featuring a higher range and a modernised cabin interior.

In August 2006 a total of 130 out of 300 Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft remain in airline service.

http://airwar.ru/enc/aliner/yak142.html

Tupolev Tu-334:
http://airwar.ru/enc/craft/tu334.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-334

Work commenced on the Tu-334 in the early 1990s, but proceeded slowly due to funding problems arising from the break-up of the Soviet Union. A prototype was displayed in 1995, but this was little more than a mock-up with few systems installed. A functional aircraft first flew on February 8 1999, and later that year, agreements were put in place for MiG to undertake part of the production of the airliner.

Since then, development has been slow due to protracted budget problems. In turn, the certification of the aircraft and its entry into serial production has been delayed, with full Russian certification still not obtained. Tupolev has orders from 112 airlines wishing to purchase the aircraft, but as the project's future is far from certain, with the directors of MiG and Rosaviakosmos both alleged to be in favour of cancelling development.

As of December 2006 there are 55 firm orders for the Tupolev Tu-334 from 7 airlines, including Atlant-Soyuz Airlines and there are letters of intent from 24 airlines to obtain another 297 airplanes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_Lineage_1000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulfstream_Aerospace

The first aircraft named Gulfstream was the twin-turboprop Grumman Gulfstream I. The success of this program lead to development of the bizjet Grumman Gulfstream II. In 1978, Grumman sold Gulfstream to Allen E. Paulson's American Jet Industries, renaming the company Grumman American. The purchase of Rockwell's Aero Commander program completed the formation of the new Gulfstream Aerospace. In 1985, Chrysler acquired Gulfstream with Paulson remaining in charge but a few years later Paulson teamed up with Ted Forstmann and his associates to buy the company back.

In 1999, General Dynamics acquired Gulfstream from Forstmann Little and, in 2001, added Galaxy Aerospace from Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI). Their production lines, located in Israel, are used to co-produce the G100/G150 and G200 with IAI. The G100/G150 and G200 were formerly sold independently by Galaxy.

Current aircraft types

Gulfstream currently (2004) produces eight models of private aircraft:

* G100/G150 is based on the IAI Astra SPX.
* G200 is based on the IAI Galaxy.
* G300/G350, based upon the Gulfstream IV-SP.
* G400/G450, based upon the Gulfstream IV-X.
* G500/G550, based upon the Gulfstream V-SP (which was introduced in 2002).

http://www.jetcharter.ru/new/articles.php?id=18

The Business Jet Market Has Stalled, But Teal Predicts 'Good Years Ahead'

"Clearly, there has been some overinvestment" in reaction to the business jet boom of the 1990s, and that's why the market today is sloppy, with aircraft prices falling and too much inventory on hand.
But the worst years to come "are better than any year before 1999. And beyond 2006 the market will resume its growth."

That's the latest word from Richard Aboulafia, aircraft industry seer at the Fairfax, Virginia-based Teal Group.

Teal forecasts production of 6,908 business jets over the next ten years, and says that in 2002 dollars they will be worth a not-at-all-shabby $95.2 billion. By value, almost 45% of them will be high-end jets. On top of that will be production of 174 corporate versions of jetliners and regional jets, worth another $6.7 billion.

By company, Bombardier still edges out a larger, Galaxy-encompassing Gulfstream, barely, taking 25.5% of the coming decade's business to Gulfstream's 25.4%, Teal says.

"Cessna will be number three with 19.2%, followed by Dassault with 18.1%. A troubled Raytheon will be left with 10%," Aboulafia predicts.

Teal concedes that its startlingly precise prognostications are predicated on large current backlogs, and that much of the collective industry backlog is "unverifiable."

"A lack of transparency means there are few indicators of the market's long-term direction," Aboulafia says. The other big doubt-maker is the fractional business. The demise of United Airlines' Avolar, which had been viewed by many as representing a new model that would provide a near-seamless bridge from commercial flying to the business jet, casts a pall of doubt over the entire sector.

Profits, too may be problematic in future. "Margins in this segment of the aviation industry tend to be higher than the other segments, but this will probably change," Aboulafia opines. Again, the problem is fractionals: "Much of the industry's growth has been due to fractional ownership companies, which are better able to exert pricing pressure on manufacturers," the Teal man says. "This pressure will increase as the fractional industry restructures."

In the corporate jet market, business is booming
By Don Phillips International Herald Tribune

SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2005

LE BOURGET, France Sales of high-end business jets sank to such a low level in the first half of 2003 that the industry worried seriously about its future. But by the end of the year, sales were booming again - and still are.

Peter Edwards, president of Bombardier Business Aircraft, which accounts for just over a quarter of the market, attributes the turnaround to a remarkable confluence of events ranging from the Chinese military's easing of restrictions on private aircraft flight to what he called the U.S. Transportation Security Administration's continuing "humiliation" of the average airline passenger.

"Everything just reached the right point at the right time," Edwards said in an interview aboard one of his new corporate jets at the Paris Air Show.

Sales are climbing so fast that the company is considering steps, like stretching out delivery times, to keep the market from "overheating," he said. That could help avoid a future slump if the market were to get saturated.

In the first quarter of 2005, Bombardier delivered 43 planes. That compares with 34 in the comparable period in 2004 and 14 in the first quarter of 2003.

In the industry over all, 627 planes, worth about $2.7 billion, were delivered in the first quarter of 2005, 15.7 percent more than in 2004. That includes both jets and less-expensive turboprops. Turboprop shipments grew by 67.6 percent, business jets by 21.1 percent, and piston planes by 9.6 percent.

Of the major manufacturers of business jets - Bombardier, Cessna, Dassault, Gulfstream and Raytheon - only Cessna had a decline in growth in 2004. But even it was back to solid growth by the second half of that year.

The boom in sales is now worldwide. The United States has traditionally been the only real market for business jets, but sales caught on in Europe in the past few years and are suddenly booming in newly prosperous Asia, Edwards said.

Regional airliner
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_jet

A regional airliner is a small airliner designed to fly between 35 and 100 passengers from point to point, generally within one country. They are often operated by commuter airlines or by government militaries to transport troops between bases, although some large major airlines operate their own regional fleets. The regional jet (RJ) is a jet-engined aircraft of the same class that has become the aircraft of choice for most domestic operations.

History
...
By the 1970s the first generation feederliners were starting to wear out, and a replacement program started. De Havilland Canada started this process with the introduction of the Dash 7, but this was tailored more to the short-range STOL role than feederliners. They were considerably more successful with their Dash 8, which had economic benefits over the earlier generation machines, and was faster and quieter as well. This sparked off the development of a number of similar designs, including the ATR 42, Saab 340 and Fokker F50. With all this competition, the market quickly saturated and most of the lines shut down.

Another reason for the downturn in the turboprop market was the introduction of the first regional jets. The first real example is the BAe 146, but as this aircraft has four engines, it could not compete on maintenance costs. This was addressed with the twin-engine Canadair Regional Jet, which became a best-seller and spawned the similar Embraer ERJ 145. These designs had the speed and range needed to compete with much larger designs like the Boeing 737, yet were smaller, allowing them to serve any low-capacity route. Soon they were being used in the feederliner role. Although not as economical as the turboprop, they could fill both this role and the medium-range airliner role, and were generally better liked by the passengers.

Further developments

The main competitor which emerged for the CRJ was the Embraer ERJ 145. Fairchild-Dornier introduced the 328JET to compete, but went bankrupt soon afterwards and the type did not enter large scale production. and a Fokker-ERNO design ended when Fokker went bankrupt before the design was finalized. Bombardier, which had previously purchased Shorts, Canadair, de Havilland Canada and Learjet, turned down the offer to purchase Fokker, and the design forecast to replace the shelved BRJX died with Fokker.

Smaller jetliners have been a part of the market since the early days of jet airliners. The Sud Caravelle would today be placed in the "small" category due to size alone Other examples include the 40-seat Yakovlev Yak-40 and mid-sized BAe 146 and Fokker F100. The key difference between these designs and current regional jets is operational costs, the new designs cost significantly less to operate, making them suitable for many different roles, as opposed to simply being "short-mid range airliners".

In 2005, the "regional jet" boom suddenly collapsed, as increasing fuel prices and airline bankruptcies led to a rethinking of route structures. The high per-seat operational costs of the classic 50-seat regional jet have been exacerbated by an environment of ever-lowering fares. Furthermore, RJs increasingly were assigned to operate flights of two hours or more. This led to passenger complaints, as their comfort and ergonomics compare unfavorably to the larger "mainline" jets which they replaced on these flights. In late 2005, Canadair suspended its CRJ-200 production line, marking the end of an era for the regional jet. The new trend is for larger aircraft with better economics, exemplified by Canadair's 70-seat CRJ-700 and the 70-110-seat Embraer E-Jets series. The E-Jets in particular blur the line between "mainline" and "regional," as their cabin comfort is comparable or superior to traditional narrowbody jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 while offering ranges of over 2,000 miles. By comparison, the original DC-9 jet aircraft were designed to seat approximately 75 passengers.

Bombardier to suspend CRJ200 production
Airline Industry Information, Oct 31, 2005

Bombardier is to halt the production of its CRJ200 jet.

The aircraft maker has said that it would halt production of the 50-seat aircraft because the market is moving towards aircraft with more capacity. Bombardier will suspend the production of the aircraft model in mid-January and go ahead with a previously planned decision to lay off 660 employees in Montreal, Canada and Belfast, Northern Ireland.

John Paul Macdonald, the company's spokesman, has said that Bombardier does not yet know when or if it will relaunch production of the CRJ200. The production of the Challenger 850 business jet will not be affected by the decision to halt the CRJ200, Reuters reported.

Bombardier has no plans for entering light-plane market, yet
Strong sales drive profit up by 30%
BERTRAND MAROTTE
POSTED ON 29/03/07

MONTREAL -- Coming off its best year yet on the business jet front, market leader Bombardier Inc. is keeping a close watch on what the competition -- including Onex Corp. -- are up to, but has no plans to enter the popular light-plane niche, company executives say.

The corporate jet business is a "strong market today. There's interest on the part of new players entering the market, but they're mostly in segments we're not in," said Pierre Beaudoin, head of Bombardier Aerospace.

He made the comments on a conference call with analysts and news media after the company posted a fourth-quarter profit that was up 30 per cent on robust sales in the rail division as well as business jets.

Asked about the recent sale of Raytheon Aircraft Co. -- maker of the Hawker business jet and Beechcraft turboprop -- to a consortium made up of Toronto-based Onex and an affiliate of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. of New York, Mr. Beaudoin replied that Bombardier is "following them very closely."

Raytheon, re-baptized Hawker Beechcraft Corp., is ranked fifth globally in terms of value of deliveries, with about 10 per cent of the corporate aircraft market.

Montreal-based Bombardier is ranked first, with about 30 per cent of the market, followed by General Dynamics Corp.'s Gulfstream division; Textron Inc.'s Cessna unit; and France's Dassault Aviation.

Bombardier's family of corporate jets includes the Learjet, Challenger and Global Express.

Bombardier's Brazilian rival in the regional jet market, Embraer SA, has also recently entered the hot business jet market and the very-light jet segment as well.

Very-light planes are typically are three- to four-passenger craft used as air taxis.

Mr. Beaudoin said Bombardier has no plans, at least in the short term, to join the fray in the very-light jet market. "We don't participate in this segment."

But he added that Bombardier could end up applying some of the technological innovations in light-jet development to its own larger aircraft. The business jet outlook continues to be robust, with no slowdown in sight, he added.

"The orders are certainly strong and the trend right now is continuing. I don't see the market slowing down at this point."

Bombardier booked 274 business jet orders last year, up from 219 in the previous year.

Demand for Bombardier's turboprops is also strong. Only regional jet sales continue to be sluggish, but Mr. Beaudoin said he's hopeful they will bounce back as the U.S. airlines complete their restructuring programs.

He acknowledged that Bombardier's regional jet program is still not contributing to profit.

And he said the company is refining its C Series proposal to build an all-new 110- to 130-seat airliner.

Bombardier has until some time next year to make a decision on whether to go ahead with the $2-billion project, with a view to bringing the plane into service in 2013, Mr. Beaudoin said.

But some analysts have said they expect Bombardier to formally launch the C Series at the International Paris Air Show in June.

Meanwhile, Bombardier's other unit, rail equipment, subway cars and tramways, posted its best year so far, with $11.8-billion (U.S.) in new orders. The transportation division now leads the industry with a record backlog of $27.5-billion, up $6.6-billion from the previous year.

Brazilian Air Force designation: P-95

This land based maritime surveillance aircraft, based on the
EMB-110 Bandeirante, was designed to meet specifications issued by
the Comando Costeiro, the Brazilian Air Force's Coastal Command.
Main external differences are the large nose radome, housing search
radar, and the addition of wingtip fuel tanks.

The EMB-111 flew for the first time on 15 August 1977, and 12
were delivered to the Brazilian Air Force. Six were delivered to
the Chilean Navy in 1978 and 1979
. These aircraft have some mission
equipment changes, including full de-icing system, and passive ECM
antennae under the nose and at the tail. One EMB-111 was delivered
in August 1981 to the Gabonese Air Force, and two were ordered in
1986 by the air force of Angola. Delivery dates for the Angolan
pair were still awaiting financial approval in 1989
.

In December 1987, the Brazilian Air Force ordered a further ten
EMB-111s, with deliveries to begin in October 1989
. The new
aircraft will be similar to those currently in service, except for
structural improvements and updated avionics which include MEL
Super Searcher radar and Thomson-CSF DR 2000A Mk II/Dalia 1000A Mk
II ESM; Collins EFIS-74 electronic flight instrument system, ADI-84
and APS-65 autopilot; and a Canadian Marconi CMA 771 Mk III Omega
navigation system. The earlier aircraft will be brought up to a
similar standard.

Brazilian Air Force designation: C-95

The Bandeirante twin-turboprop light transport was developed to
a Brazilian Ministry of Aeronautics specification calling for a
general purpose aircraft capable of carrying out transport,
navigation training and aeromedical evacuation missions. The first
of three EMB-100 prototypes (described in the 1970-71 Jane's) made
its initial flight on 26 October 1968, followed by the first
production EMB-110 Bandeirante (C-95/2133) on 9 August 1972.
Following Brazilian certification to FAR Pt 23, the first three
Bandeirantes were delivered to the Brazilian Air Force on 9
February 1973.

Bandeirantes of various models have been sold to more than 80
operators in 36 countries worldwide. By 1 September 1988 the
worldwide fleet of Bandeirantes had logged more than 4.5 million
flying hours; at that time Embraer had delivered 475 Bandeirantes
and military EMB-111 maritime surveillance aircraft, with
production continuing at the rate of one per month
. Deliveries to
the Brazilian Air Force then totalled 140 (60 C-95, 20 C-95A, 28
C-95B, six R-95, five SC-95B, one XYC-95B, two EC-95B, six C-95C
and 12 EMB-111/P-95
).

Details of models no longer in regular production can be found
in the 1984-85 and previous editions of Jane's, and any of these
can still be produced to special order. Principal models in current
production are as follows:
EMB-110P1A. Updated version of P1 with 10º tailplane dihedral
and other detail changes (listed in 1987-88 and earlier editions).
First two delivered in December 1983 to Provincetown-Boston
Airlines, USA. Replaced P1 as standard version from c/n 439
onwards; retrofits available for earlier P1s. Delivery of 10 to
Brazilian Air Force (as C-95C), with Collins EFIS package, began in
May 1988.
EMB-110P1K. Military utility, cargo and paradropping version of
P1 (Brazilian Air Force designation C-95B; 36 delivered, including
special variants). No tailplane dihedral.
EMB-110P1K SAR. Search and rescue version of P1K (Brazilian Air
Force designation SC-95B), equipped for inland and overwater
search, paradropping and aeromedical evacuation. Max T-O weight
6000 kg (13230 lb). Accommodation for up to six stretchers plus
seats for observers and space for inflatable dinghies and other
rescue equipment. Two `bubble' windows in each side of cabin.
Independent oxygen system for medevac missions. Five for Brazilian
Air Force; operated by 2º Esquadrao of the 10º Grupo de Aviacao at
Campo Grande.
EMB-110P2A. Replaced former P2 (1984-85 Jane's) as third-level
commuter transport version, carrying up to 21 passengers.
Incorporates same changes as P1A. Detailed description applies
mainly to this version.
EMB-110P1A/41 and EMB-110P2A/41. New versions of P1A and P2A,
available from 1983, certificated under SFAR Pt 41 for a max T-O
weight of 5900 kg (13010 lb). These versions replaced former P1/41
and P2/41. Power plant and dimensions unchanged. Available also as
retrofit to existing P1/41 and P2/41 versions.
EMB-111. Maritime surveillance version, described separately.

Programme

Design began September 1979; three flying prototypes, two static/fatigue test aircraft and one pre-series demonstrator built (first flight, by PT-ZBA, 27 July 1983); Brazilian CTA certification with original PW115 engines on 10 May 1985 followed by FAA (FAR Pt 25) type approval 9 July 1985, British/French/German approval 1986 and Australian in April 1990; deliveries began June 1985 (to Atlantic Southeast Airlines, USA, entering service that October); first order for corporate version (United Technologies Corporation, USA) received August 1986, delivered following month.

From October 1986 (c/n 12002:cool:, all Brasilias delivered incorporate composites materials equivalent to 10 per cent of aircraft basic empty weight; also since late 1986 has been available in hot-and-high version (certified 26 August 1986) with PW118A engines which maintain maximum output up to ISA + 15ºC at S/L (first customer Skywest of USA); on 4 January 1989, first prototype began flight trials with Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop on port side of rear fuselage, as testbed for engine installation of subsequently cancelled Embraer/FMA CBA-123; 300th Brasilia delivered 4 September 1995; more than five million flying hours by September 1998, at which time Brasilias had carried more than 60 million passengers.

Extended-range EMB-120ER (now standard version) announced June 1991, certified by CTA February 1992.

Embraer delivered the 352nd (including prototypes) aircraft to SkyWest in September 1999. Production plans called for eight per year in 2000 and 2001, but no more produced. Around 350 examples remain in service.

Announced 12 June 89
First prototype material cut 2Q 93
First flight 11 Aug 95
Officially rolled out 18 Aug 95
Certification 10 Dec 96
First delivery 19 Dec 96

Development plans revealed 12 June 1989, aimed at first flight late 1991 and first deliveries mid-1993; programme delayed by company cutbacks, complete redesign of wing and other changes, as described in 2000-01 and earlier Jane's.

First metal cut for prototype, and tooling fabrication, in second quarter 1993; assembly of prototype (PT-ZJA) began October 1994; fuselage sections mated January 1995; first flight 11 August 1995 ahead of formal roll-out and 'official' first flight a week later; first of three pre-series aircraft (PT-ZJB) first flown 17 November 1995; second ('ZJC) flew on 14 February and third ('ZJD) 2 April 1996; FAA and Brazilian CTA certification (to FAR/JAR 25, FAR Pt 36, ICAO Annex 16 and FAR Pt 121) achieved 10 December 1996. Single prototype and three pre-series aircraft undertook a 1,600 hour, 13 month development flight testing and certification programme. Deliveries began on 19 December 1996 with two aircraft (N15925 and N15926) to US launch customer Continental Express. Designation changed from EMB-145 to ERJ-145 in October 1997 to reflect 'Regional Jet' terminology, although former is retained for corporate and military variants. Certified by the aviation authorities of 27 countries by September 1998.

In addition to its suitability for executive transport and corporate shuttle roles, Embraer foresees military potential for the ERJ-145 as a tanker aircraft for small combat units, and as an AEW, elint, comint, sigint or battlefield surveillance platform. See Current Versions.

Two static test airframes: first (802) completed trials on 30 August 1996; second (803) began 10 year programme in December 1996.

ERJ series achieved 10 million flight hours in November 2006.

Structure

Embraer has headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil, and offices, subsidiaries and customer service bases in China, France, Portugal, Singapore and the US. The business is divided by market segments. These are airline, business aviation, and defence.

Defence

More than 20 foreign military air fleets operate aircraft designed and manufactured by Embraer. Currently, 179 models of the subsonic AMX ground-attack and air-support aircraft are flying for the Brazilian and Italian governments. The advanced attack AMX-T jet for pilot training and armed reconnaissance missions has been selected and ordered by Venezuela and will soon enter service. The Airborne Early Warning and Control EMB 145 AEW&C and the Remote Sensing EMB 145 RS/AGS are already performing regular flight operations with the Amazon Surveillance Program (SIVAM) in Brazil. The Maritime Patrol P-99, in its MP variant, has successfully completed the flight-test programme, and the first unit was delivered to its customer. Embraer also produces the Super Tucano, a light-attack/trainer aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), which employs Embraer aircraft in more than 50 per cent of its fleet. The first series production aircraft was delivered to FAB in December 2003.

Mergers and acquisitions

Assessment

Embraer saw defence sales increase year on year from USD365.8 million to USD423.8 million during fiscal year 2005, accounting for 11.1 per cent of group turnover.

Sales in this area were helped by orders from both the Brazilian Air Force and the Government of Columbia, for a total of 48 Super Tucano light attack aircraft (23 and 25 units respectively). During the year, 24 Super Tucano units were delivered to Brazil. Embraer was also bidding to meet the requirements of the Singapore Air Force for basic training (the Super Tucano), and had submitted a bid for a similar Turkish requirement. It was waiting for news on both at the time of writing. Furthermore, Embraer told investors at the end of the period that the programme to modernise 46 F05 BR fighters for the Brazilian Air Force was "progressing as scheduled".

Moving forward, Embraer has some issues to contend with in the field of defence. It was announced in 2005 that the US Army Aerial Common Sensor programme would be scrapped as a result of weight problems, which resulted from the number of sensors the army wanted installed, Embraer had teamed with Lockheed Martin to offer the ERJ-145 aircraft. At the time of writing, in July 2006, a US report into the programme was pending, and a relaunch with a new requirement was the anticipated outcome.

It was suggested that rejecting the ERJ-145 in favour of a larger aircraft that would be able to carry more weight would be an option. Embraer was also (again, at the time of writing) waiting for movement on the Brazilian fighter programme, which was cancelled in February 2005. Embraer was expected to team up with fighter manufacturer Saab, which had offered the Gripen during the last competition. Embraer had previously teamed with French manufacturer Dassault, which had offered the Mirage 2000-5.

Embraer has previously made significant in-roads in to the world defence market through its EMB-145 aircraft, which has served as a platform for the Ericsson Microwave Systems Erieye radar system. The Hellenic Air Force, for example, ordered four such aircraft which were delivered during 2004 and 2005. It is worth noting, however, that Ericsson Microwave Systems has now been acquired by Swedish Group Saab, which also offers its Saab 2000 aircraft as an Erieye platform (as in the case of the sale of the system to Pakistan). Saab has indicated to Jane's, however, that it has not ruled out working with Embraer in the future, but the impact remains to be seen.

In June 2006, Embraer started trading under its new listings on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (BOVESPA) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as part of a move to restructure the company. The Brazilian group revised its capital structure with a view to 'improving liquidity' of its stock, and in order to introduce mechanisms to 'restrict the acquisition of control and hostile takeover', investors were told. In addition, the group said the transactions will ensure the 'adoption of higher corporate standards' and that Embraer will become the 'first major Brazilian company with dispersed capital and decision-making powers only exercised by Brazilian shareholders'. Both moves were described as 'without precedent in Brazil'. The revision of Embraer's capital structure involved the group merging with Rio Han, a closed company made up of Embraer's three largest shareholders established specifically for the deal. Bozano Group and pension funds Previ and Sistel held 20.16 per cent of Embraer stock and 60 per cent of voting rights.

The common shares of the new entity began trading on the Novo Mercado segment of the BOVESPA and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) on the NYSE. Each preferred and common share of the company in its old form was exchanged for one common share, while the old stock ceased trading. Embraer is currently owned by Bozano (11.1 per cent); Previ (16.4 per cent); Sistel (7.4 per cent); BNDESPAR (6.3 per cent); the Brazilian government (0.3 per cent); other BOVESPA investors (19.2 per cent); and NYSE investors (39.3 per cent). The Brazilian government retained a golden share following the restructure. Embraer was initially almost wholly owned by the Brazilian state, which sold 55.4 per cent of the voting stock in the group for USD130.5 million in 1995. A consortium led by Brazilian investment bank Bozano Simonsen bought a controlling 45 per cent stake, of which the US financial house Wasserstein Perella took up 41 per cent. Embraer's shares were first listed on the NYSE in July 2000.

It emerged in February 2007 that EADS had sold its 2.12 per cent holding in Brazilian aerospace group Embraer for a total of EUR124 million (USD162 million), while Dassault aviation also reduced its stake. The sales of the stakes held by the two European defence and aerospace organisations came as part of Embraer's "second offering" of shares on 8 February, which saw 10.93 million shares valued at USD743 million sold to both Brazilian and foreign investors. The extent to which Dassault reduced its exposure to Embraer was not disclosed. In addition to Dassault and EADS, the holdings of Previ (the pension fund for workers at state-owned Banco do Brasil SA), Sistel (the pension fund for telecoms company Telemar) and BNDESPAR (the equity arm of the Brazilian National Development Bank) were also reduced.
