Coalition Strikes Destroy ISIL Boats Fleeing From East Mosul
From a U.S. Central Command News Release

SOUTHWEST ASIA, Jan. 21, 2017 — In three days of operations that began Jan. 18, coalition forces struck 90 watercraft and three barges on the Tigris River in Mosul, Iraq, U.S. Central Command officials reported today.

Many of these watercraft were being used to ferry Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant fighters and equipment across the river from East Mosul to West Mosul in an attempt to escape the Iraqi security forces as they continued to clear the remaining portions of East Mosul, officials said.

Iraqi security forces secured the Eastern bank of all five bridges across the Tigris River in Mosul during the past week of clearing operations, they added, making it difficult for ISIL fighters to flee.

ISIL Fighters Desperate

"We believe this was a desperate attempt to retrograde ISIL fighters now that the Iraqi security forces own the eastern bank of every bridge in Mosul," said Air Force Col. John L. Dorrian, spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve. "This is one more example of how the coalition is supporting the military defeat of ISIL by launching airstrikes while Iraqi military complete the clearance of eastern Mosul."

Since the operation to liberate Mosul began Oct. 17, the coalition has destroyed at least 112 watercraft on the Tigris River in Mosul, officials said, with several more damaged or destroyed outside of the city.

Iraqi Forces Free Eastern Mosul From ISIL, OIR Commander Says
By Terri Moon CronkDoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2017 — Last night, Iraqi security forces liberated eastern Mosul from more than two years of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s control, Army Maj. Gen. Joseph M. Martin, commanding general, Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command Operation Inherent Resolve, told reporters today.

“After more than 100 days of tough urban combat, the government of Iraq and the Iraqi security forces announced the liberation of eastern Mosul,” said Martin, who’s also commander of the 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas.

“While clearance operations will continue, the Iraqi security forces control all areas inside of the city east of the Tigris River,” the general said.

‘Monumental Achievement’

Calling the liberation of eastern Mosul “a monumental achievement” for the Iraqi security forces, Martin said the success would have been a difficult task for any army in the world.

“It's the hardest door-to-door fighting the world has seen in recent history,” he emphasized.

‘Difficult Fight’ for Western Mosul Ahead

“There is still a difficult fight ahead in western Mosul, but the ISF has proven that they are both a professional and formidable fighting force,” Martin said.

Overall, the city of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, is about 145 square kilometers -- nearly 56 miles -- and about the size of Philadelphia. The city has 1.2 million residents, more than 200,000 structures and nearly 3,000 kilometers -- more than 1,864 miles -- of road to clear, Martin said.

The ISF’s next fight to retake western Mosul will be challenging, Martin said, adding that ISIL has controlled the entire city for more than two years. And in that time, he added, the enemy has fortified its defensive positions and prepared its supplies for that defense.

VIDEO | 01:38 | General Discusses Counter-ISIL Military Goals

“[ISIL] continues to occupy protected civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and mosques,” the general said of western Mosul. “We know they've done this on the east side and we can reasonably expect more of the same on the west side.”

Iraqis’ Sustained Success

Martin said with help from the coalition, the ISF has had sustained success in the past two-plus years.

“Think about it,” he said. “Since September 2014, when the enemy was essentially at the gates of Baghdad, they've liberated over 2.4 million people; regained tens of thousands of square kilometers of ground; and liberated hundreds of towns and villages.”

Through joint operations, the coalition has degraded ISIL's fighters on the front lines, Martin said, adding, “We've interrupted their command-and-control apparatus and imposed an incredible strain on their leaders, industrial base, financial system, communications networks and the system that they use to bring in foreign fighters to fill their rapidly depleting ranks here in Iraq.”

ISIL continues to be a parasite, relentlessly exploiting the people and infrastructure like hospitals, schools and mosques despite the international laws protecting those sites, the general said.

“The important thing to remember is that the Iraqi security forces and every nation in this coalition are united with the goal to liberate Mosul and defeat [ISIL] in Iraq,” he said.

Martin added, “This country has done an incredible job fighting a very resilient and adaptive foe, but Iraq is committed [as] we are in the coalition to defeating [ISIL] here."

Pentagon Official Details Counter-ISIL Progress in Iraq, Syria
By Lisa FerdinandoDoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2017 — The coalition and its partners in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant continue to make gains in Iraq and Syria, a Pentagon spokesman said today.

An Iraqi soldier searches a vehicle during training at Camp Taji, Iraq, Jan. 22, 2017. Iraqi soldiers were learning to conduct personnel and vehicle searches for improvised explosive devices in support of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve. Army photo by Spc. Christopher Brecht

Iraqi forces have cleared eastern Mosul and are focused on removing remaining fighters as other terrorists flee west to Badush, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters.

In an "indication of their desperation" to get to the ISIL-controlled area, terrorists are trying to drive their vehicles through a shallow area of the Tigris river, he said.

"Some vehicles are making it, some are not," Davis said, pointing out that ISIL had previously destroyed the bridges linking the two areas.

'Tremendous Pressure' on ISIL in Syria

The coalition carried out more than 50 airstrikes over the last week in Syria, supporting Syrian Democratic Forces in clearing nearly 30 square kilometers northwest of Raqqa, the captain said.

"The counter-ISIL coalition continues to lay tremendous pressure on extremist organizations in northern Syria," he said.

The SDF's multi-ethnic forces are methodically clearing the areas of remaining pockets of ISIL terrorists and fortifying their own defenses, Davis said.

"The SDF remains within four kilometers of the Tabqa Dam and less than 30 kilometers from Raqqa," he added.

Since the operation to isolate the key city of Raqqa began Nov. 5, the SDF has cleared more than 3,000 square kilometers and the coalition has conducted nearly 900 precision airstrikes, he said.

"These strikes have destroyed more than 100 [ISIL] vehicles, more than 300 fortifications, degrading ISIS's ability to maneuver and defend themselves and the occupied city from the advancing Syrian Democratic Forces," the captain said.

'Deliberate, Dynamic Strikes' in Northwestern Syria

The coalition continues to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to support its Turkish partners in the fight against ISIL around al-Bab in northwestern Syria, he said.

"Additionally, the coalition continues to conduct deliberate and dynamic strikes against ISIS targets of the vicinity of al-Bab," Davis said.

Coalition aircraft have conducted about 20 strikes in the vicinity of al-Bab so far this month, destroying ISIL vehicles, fighting positons, indirect-fire systems, command-and-control nodes and vehicle bombs, the captain said.

"We'll continue to work with Turkey and our partner forces to maximize our efforts in degrading and defeating [ISIL]," Davis said, adding, "We continue to develop plans for greater coordination and support in the operations in and around al-Bab."

"Fierce fighting in #DeirEzzor as #ISIS takes advantage of bad weather to attack the military airport"

Вопрос модераторам: как вставлять сообщения из Twitter в мои сообщения на форуме? HTML код не проходит, получается следующее:
