Northrop Develops Laser Missile Jammer For F-35
12 Sep 2013 Graham Warwick | AWIN First
"Northrop Grumman has begun company-funded development of a Directed Infrared Countermeasures (Dircm) system for fast jets, anticipating a requirement to protect the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter from heat-seeking air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles....
...A Dircm is not part of the requirements for the initial, Block 3-standard F-35 now in development. But draft requirements already exist and Northrop says a laser jammer is now expected to be part of the scheduled Block 5 update.
The system must meet low-observability (LO) requirements and be packaged to fit in a restricted space available inside the F-35. But it will have a smaller, more-powerful laser than current Dircm systems and require liquid cooling, Palombo says.
The ThNDR, which includes the laser, beam steering and LO window, is packaged to fit inside volume available alongside sensors for the F-35’s distributed aperture system (DAS). There would be two jam heads, one on top and one underneath the aircraft to provide spherical coverage with minimal change to the outer mold line.
The DAS, which has six infrared sensors located to provide a 360-deg. view around the aircraft, would provide missile warning, detecting and declaring incoming threats and cueing the pointer/tracker, or jam head....
...Tests in the system-integration lab will look at challenges such as the high-speed hand-off of targets between the upper and lower jam heads as the F-35 rolls at rates of up to 170-deg./sec., he says...."

Innovative Design Promises to Expand Laser Weapon Effectiveness on Fighter Aircraft
15 Sep 2014 LM
"SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 15, 2014 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the University of Notre Dame, has demonstrated the airworthiness of a new beam control turret being developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and AFRL to give 360-degree coverage for high-energy laser weapons operating on military aircraft. A research aircraft equipped with the Aero-adaptive Aero-optic Beam Control (ABC) turret conducted eight flights in Michigan.
“These initial flight tests validate the performance of our ABC turret design, which is an enabler for integrating high energy lasers on military aircraft,” said Doug Graham, vice president of advanced programs, Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, Lockheed Martin Space Systems.
The ABC turret system is designed to allow high-energy lasers to engage enemy aircraft and missiles above, below and behind the aircraft. Lockheed Martin’s flow control and optical compensation technologies counteract the effects of turbulence caused by the protrusion of a turret from an aircraft’s fuselage.
All turret components met U.S. Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration airworthiness requirements.
Subsequent flight tests over the next year will demonstrate the turret in increasingly complex operations...."

DIRECTED INFRARED COUNTER MEASURE (DIRCM) TURRET
Directed InfraRed Counter Measure (DIRCM) technology has been developed to protect aircraft against attack from sophisticated Infrared guided missiles. DIRCM technology represents the latest step in the evolution of missile countermeasures systems.
DIRCM systems consist of a missile approach warning system that detects the launch and approach of the missile, and a director system, e.g. a turret, that is cued to track the approaching missile. The director turret contains an imaging system that detects the infrared signature of the approaching missile and enables the turret to lock onto and track the missile. Once the turret is tracking the missile, an Infra Red Countermeasure laser (IRCM laser) is fired through the turret at the missile, and the laser beam contains a code that will “jam” the guidance head of the missile and cause it to lose lock on the aircraft.
BAE Systems Australia has conducted the phased development of an Australian DIRCM demonstrator for the Department of Defence. The demonstrator program focused on the development of a compact, low drag turret design. To achieve this, BAE Systems applied a novel optical design to enable considerable miniaturisation of the turret, reducing it to a diameter of approximately 150 mm. Although the development has specifically focused on a low drag design for fast jet applications, a secondary consideration has been to ensure that no design decisions are made that preclude the turret being used on other platforms such as helicopters and transport aircraft.
The turret incorporates an azimuth/elevation gimbal design, with associated optical mirrors, for directing the laser source and also for tracking of the target via the optical aperture. The gimbals are driven by direct drive DC motors with optical encoders providing positional feedback, and elevation stage mounted inertial rate sensors providing rate feedback information.
Specifications:
• Greater than 2 pi steradian field of regard with a single turret
• 360° continuous azimuth stage

• Maximum slew time < 0.3 s.
• 4° fine track sensor field of view,
• Maximum tracking rates of 30°/s and maximum acceleration of 10°/s2
