Between 1954 and 1959, Flight Refuelling became the main sub-contractor to the Gloster Aircraft Company for its Meteor jets fighter - the first Allied jet to see service in the Second World War.
Flight Refuelling staff refurbished versions 3,4,7,8 and 9 of the Meteor jet which first went into RAF squadron service in the summer of 1944.
As well as supplying the RAF, Tarrant Rushton Meteors went to Israel, Egypt, Syria and Latin America.
In just four years, Tarrant Rushton serviced, repaired, rebuilt and repainted more than 400 Meteor jets; airfield staff turning out ten a month at their fastest and each plane taking three months from start to finish of the work.
Airfield staff worked on aircraft from both the Egyptian and Israeli air forces - the enemy’s aircraft being hidden round the back of hangar No 2. whenever official delegations from the two countries visited the airfield!
