New Radar System Implemented to Pinpoint High-Trajectory Weapons

22 February 2009 , 16:07

Arnon Ben-Dror

The IDF’s ability to warn against high-trajectory weapons are expected to improve dramatically during the coming year. This is thanks to a new radar system, called the Raz, which is expected to be used for operations during 2009. This radar will be able to detect the firing of mortar shells at Israeli territory. In light of this new, innovative development, the IDF will be able to provide a warning for all high-trajectory firing used to attack Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip.

The experimental model of the Raz radar system was tested during the last few days of Operation Cast Lead and proved to be highly successful. Chief Officer of the Artillery Corps, Brig. Gen. David Savisa, has confidence in the Raz radar system and said, "The Raz radar system pinpoints anything that flies aloft in great depth." According to Brig. Gen. Savisa, during the radar experimentation period, it successfully pinpointed everything that was fired towards Israeli territory.

The Raz operations room:

Today, the Nurit radar system is used by the Artillery Corps and it enables them to locate missiles including the Grad, Qassam and Katyusha missiles that have been fired at Israel. Mortar shells are currently the most terrifying factor for the residents living in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip – more than any other of the high-trajectory weapons that are fired at Israel – to which the Raz radar system provides hermetic pinpointing.

New radar can pinpoint rocket launchers
Dec. 10, 2008
Yaakov Katz , THE JERUSALEM POST

With an eye to a future conflict with Hamas and Hizbullah, the IDF's Artillery Corps is preparing to integrate a new radar system that will help locate and destroy rocket launchers more quickly than ever before, Chief Artillery Officer Brig.-Gen. Michel Ben-Baruch has told The Jerusalem Post.

The radar will be operational within a few months.

Under production by Elta Systems - a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries - the new radar will be able to provide artillery cannons with a 360-degree view of a battlefield and detect the exact location of rocket launchers.

The location will then be transmitted digitally to the cannons or rocket systems deployed nearby, which will be able to fire at the launchers and destroy them.

"There is no radar like this in the world," Ben-Baruch told the Post on Monday. "It can pinpoint the location of the launch and then find the range the cannons will need to aim at to fire."

IDF New Artillery Radar Pinpoints Rocket Launchers

Posted by David Eshel at 12/15/2008 12:00 PM CST

The IDF Artillery Corps is integrating a new radar system that will help locate and destroy rocket launchers more rapidly than ever before, Chief IDF Artillery Officer Brig. Gen. Michel Ben-Baruch has announced.

The new radar developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Elta Systems will be able to provide artillery cannons with a 360-degree view of a battlefield and detect the exact location of rocket launchers. The location will then be transmitted digitally to the field deployed cannons or rocket systems, which will be able to launch near-simultaneous counter-battery fire at the launcher sites and destroy them, before their manning crews can escape. The new radar is one of several new technologies the Artillery Corps has been integrating into service since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

Elta's EL/M-2084 Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) is an advanced phased array radar capable of performing artillery and air defense missions. It detects a wide range of flying objects with low radar cross section (RCS), including artillery shells and rockets, even in the presence of ground clutter and electromagnetic interference. The system will also calculate the anticipated impact points for each target, alerting the locations that might be affected by the threat. The MMR is scheduled to be integrated with the RAFAEL Iron Cap rocket intercepting system developed under an Israel MOD contract.

Paris Air Show: IAI unveils new multimission radar

By Robin Hughes, 19 June 2007

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Elta Systems has unveiled a new artillery locating and air-defence radar — the EL/M-2084 Multi-Mission Radar (MMR).

The EL/M-2084 is an active scanning phased array radar that leverages off the same technology (although with different frequencies) as the Elta EL/M-2080 Green Pine early-warning and fire-control radar — the dedicated multimode solid-state phased array radar for Israel's anti-ballistic missile Arrow Weapon System.

Designed to be part of a "multiple solution", the EL/M-2084 is a high-accuracy medium-/long-range transportable radar system that can detect a "bank of targets with low RCS — including unmanned aerial vehicles, rockets, artillery shells and unpowered manned threats such as hang gliders — even in the presence of ground clutter and electromagnetic interference", Baruch Reshef, deputy director, Marketing and Sales Division, Elta Systems told Jane's.

"For ballistic targets, the radar quickly detects and pinpoints the location of adversary weapons and calculates the anticipated impact points," he added.

"The EL/M-2084 is also designed to support missile-anti-missile weapon systems for Katyusha-type threat interception. Its operating regime will be similar to the Green Pine radar of the Arrow Weapon System. Its tasks will include detection and tracking of incoming threats, and guiding the outgoing countermeasure to meet the threats and destroy them," Reshef said.

It detects a wide range of flying objects with low radar cross section (RCS), including artillery shells and rockets, even in the presence of ground clutter and electromagnetic interference. For ballistic targets the radar can spot and track hundreds of targets simultaneously, and pinpoint artillery fire sources at a range of 100 km. The system will also calculate the anticipated impact points for each target, alerting the locations that might be affected by the threat. The MMR is being integrated with the RAFAEL Iron Cap rocket intercepting system developed under an Israel MOD contract. When employed in support of air defense missions, the MMR detects and tracks all types of airborne targets, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and UAVs. The radar is capable of detecting aircraft and missile targets at ranges up to 350km, depending on altitude.

MMR will be the principal sensor for the Spyder MR medium range surface to air missile system, developed by RAFAEL. It is also expected to support the ground-based variant of IAI's Barak 8 naval and land air defense systems.

http://www.newsru.co.il/israel/05oct2009/raz311.html

Ground Mobile Radar Systems":

http://www.iai.co.il/34475-en/ELTA.aspx

Giraffe AMB radar:

http://www.waronline.org/IDF/Articles/ground_support.htm#rls

http://www.fresh.co.il/vBulletin/printthread.php?t=336853

http://dover.idf.il/IDF/News_Channels/bamahana/2010/33/08.htm
