Taiwan President, VP Survive Shooting
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) _ Wounded by a would-be assassin's bullet, a weary-looking President Chen Shui-bian reassured voters about his health and Taiwan's security late Friday, hours before key elections focusing on the military threat from mainland China.
The president was hit in the abdomen and Vice President Annette Lu was shot in the right knee as they rode in an open-top red jeep down a packed street around noon Friday, the last day of campaigning in Chen's southern hometown of Tainan.
Nationalist Party presidential candidate Lien Chan and his wife Lien Fang-yu cast their vote for the presidential election, Saturday, March 20, 2004, in Taipei, Taiwan. Lien and incumbent President Chen Shui-bian are locked in a tight race up to the voting day. Taiwanese also began voting in their first island-wide referendum, spearheaded by President Chen Shui-bian and focusing on the military threat from rival China, which has angered Chinese leaders.
