Royal Australian Navy Destroyer HMAS Sydney Fires ESSM for the First Time
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Hobart-class Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) HMAS Sydney fired an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) for the first time during Combat System Sea Qualification Trials in the Southern Californian Exercise Area off the coast of the United States.

HMAS Sydney departed her homeport at Fleet Base East in Sydney in March to conduct Combat System Sea Qualification Trials in the United States. These tests are a crucial milestone in order for Sydney to be declared available for operational deployments.
HMAS Sydney is the third and final Hobart-class Guided Missile Destroyers to conduct the testing. The ship joined the RAN fleet in May 2020.

The RAN’s three Hobart-class destroyers Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney are based on the Navantia designed F100 frigate and is coupled with the Aegis Combat System. They were constructed in Australia by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance. The Hobart-class provides air defence for accompanying ships in addition to land forces and infrastructure in coastal areas, and for self-protection against missiles and aircraft. The Aegis Combat System incorporating the phased array radar, AN/SPY 1D(V), in combination with the SM-2 missile, will provide an advanced air defence system capable of engaging enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges in excess of 150km.
About ESSM
ESSM is a medium-range, all-weather, semi-active radar-guided missile used in surface-to-air and surface-to-surface roles. RAN picture.
ESSM is a medium-range, all-weather, semi-active radar-guided missile used in surface-to-air and surface-to-surface roles. ESSM represents more than four decades of technology and design improvements by a 43-year international cooperative partnership composed of 12 nations, 10 of which employ ESSM (and FMS to 3 countries: Japan, UAE and Thailand).
As a tail-controlled missile, ESSM uses enhancements to its guidance system to take advantage of improved seeker sensitivity, increased propulsion and greater weapon accuracy. These features enable ESSM to arrive at the intercept point with more endgame speed and agility to counter the threat.
ESSM’s capability bridges the gap between close-in air defense and local area defense systems. Its kinematics result in reduced time to target. It is a Multi-mission weapon system is effective against high-speed or low-velocity threats.
According to open sources, the RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) has a range of about 27 nautical miles (50 Km) and a top speed of Mach 4+.
Unlike Block 1, Block 2’s active radar homing seeker will support terminal engagement without the launch ship’s target illumination radars. The improved ESSM Block 2 will be fielded by the US Navy from 2020.
Martin Manaranche 05 Jul 2021Australian Navy Anzac-class Frigate HMAS Perth Back Afloat After Major Upgrades
Royal Australian Navy's HMAS Perth is back in the water after completion of a major part of the anzac midlife capability assurance program.
She was lowered out of the dry dock at the Australian Marine Complex at Henderson, Western Australia, after completion of upgrades to her radar capabilities, communications systems and crew-habitable areas, which are a major part of the Anzac Midlife Capability Assurance Program.
Commanding Officer Perth Commander Anthony Nagle said the complexity of the manoeuvres to get her back in the water required precise coordination.
“The undocking itself is a lengthy process – moving a vessel that is 118m long, nearly 15m wide and that weighs 3900 tonnes requires meticulous management.”
“This is a significant step towards the completion of Perth’s upgrade, which will now move on to the final stages, enabling the ship to return to the fleet and undertake deployments and exercises with our regional partners in 2022.”
Commanding Officer Perth Commander Anthony Nagle
With the motto ‘Fight and Flourish’, the long-range frigate is capable of air defence, surface and undersea warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction, and is home-ported at Garden Island, Rockingham, Western Australia.
She has the rare honour of being home-ported in her namesake city, which offers special opportunities for connection and engagement, including the crew of Perth exercising their right to Freedom of the City, which last occurred in 2009.
“The ability for our ship to remain engaged with its city namesake is very important to us and we look forward to being able to build an even stronger connection as we prepare to return Perth to sea and to operational service.”
Perth is the third vessel to carry the name.“We are honoured to represent Perth, and we want the people of Perth to be as proud of our ship as we are to carry the name HMAS Perth.”
Commanding Officer Perth Commander Anthony Nagle
Perth I was a modified Leander-class cruiser that served with distinction during World War II and was lost during the Battle of Sunda Strait.
Perth IIwas a modified Perth-class guided missile destroyer that served with distinction during the Vietnam War, and received a US Navy Unit Commendation and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
The latest Perth will conduct sea trials and certification early next year following the final steps in her upgrade process
